The data sets listed below are in GRASS format ("locations") and ready to use with GRASS.
GRASS Version Data set Documents External related data sets
GRASS 6.x: North Carolina data set North Carolina data set contains rich collection of raster, vector and point data:
GRASS 6.x: SPEARFISH data set Spearfish data set contains raster, vector and point data of South Dakota, USA (data from 80s):
GRASS 6.x IMAGERY data set (19.1MB size) - belongs to SPEARFISH, contains aerial and SPOT images, xy LOCATION, data from the 80's [change history]
GRASS 6.x Fire simulation data set (129kb size) - sample data for r.ros, r.spread, and r.spreadpath fire simulation modules. Get demo script: firedemo.sh (run within fire simulation data set)
GRASS 5.x-6.x LIDAR, erosion data sets 3D sample data from the book Open Source GIS: A GRASS GIS Approach
GRASS 6.x Slovakia 3D precipitation data set - README 3D sample data (vector, volume) from the book Open Source GIS: A GRASS GIS Approach, 2nd Edition

Spearfish data set installation:

  • If you don't have, create a directory "grassdata" (or similar) in your home directory or use an existing directory
  • change into that directory (cd grassdata)
  • extract the data set here (<data set> may be "spearfish"):

  •                                   GRASS 6.0

LOCATION: This is the name of an available geographic location.  -spearfish-
is the sample data base for which all tutorials are written.

MAPSET:   Every GRASS session runs under the name of a MAPSET.  Associated
with each MAPSET is a rectangular COORDINATE REGION and a list
                of any new maps created.

DATABASE: This is the unix directory containing the geographic databases

The REGION defaults to the entire area of the chosen LOCATION.
You may change it later with the command: g.region
      - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

LOCATION:   spearfish60___             (enter list for a list of locations)
MAPSET:     user1_____                 (or mapsets within a location)

      DATABASE:   /opt/grassdata____________

AFTER COMPLETING ALL ANSWERS, HIT <ESC><ENTER>TO CONTINUE
                                  (OR <CTRL><C> TO CANCEL)

  • the location name is the name of the data set subdirectory (e.g. spearfish60 or imagery60)
  • the mapset name is users1 (at your choice)
  • leave this screen with <ESC><ENTER>
Now you can "play around" with GRASS!
