MSWindows provides many good environments for the development
of software. However, GNU/Linux, and Unix before it, has a long
tradition of providing powerful environments for software development.
Sophisticated graphical interactive development environments (IDEs)
were developed on Unix but took of on the Apple Macintosh and
particularly on MSWindows. However, the focus is beginning to
again turn to GNU/Linux as the most flexible open source, free
software, and commercial development environment.
