The sound card turns out not to be a real SB Live! soundcard, and is not currently supported by GNU/Linux. For now, use the onboard sound card which works just fine, although it does not have the features of the SB Live!
I don't think Dell is being straight with their advertising. I ordered a Sound Blaster Live! sound card and then I was supplied with a different sound card that does not support the standard EMU10K1 Digital Signal Processor. Dell make no mention on the web site that their sound card is not actually the real Sound Blaster Live! sound card (see http://www.soundblaster.com/products/sblive/). Nor does the Dell web site mention that in order to make use of this ``not real'' sound card one needs need to purchase additional software.
